Types of Sparring
We offer different forms of sparring to help students refine their skills:
-
Traditional Point Sparring: Competitors earn points for controlled, well-executed techniques. Matches are paused after each successful point.
-
Combat Weapons Sparring: Participants use padded weapons in controlled combat scenarios.
-
Team Sparring: A group-based competition format that emphasizes teamwork and strategy.

Weapons Training

Our school offers training in several ATA-approved weapons!
Weapons training is an exciting part of ATA Taekwondo, helping students develop precision, coordination, and control. As students advance in rank, they have the opportunity to learn and master various traditional martial arts weapons.
Nunchucks (Ssahng Jeol Bong)
The nunchucks are a fast-moving weapon that improves hand-eye coordination, agility, and wrist control. Students learn spinning, striking, and blocking techniques, gradually increasing speed and complexity as they progress.

Bo Staff (Bahng Mahng Ee)
The bo staff is a versatile, long-range weapon that focuses on power, balance, and fluid motion. Training includes striking, sweeping, and spinning techniques that enhance both offensive and defensive skills.

Sword training in ATA follows structured patterns and cutting techniques that emphasize precision and discipline. Students learn controlled strikes, blocks, and kata (forms) designed to improve focus and technique. Beginner swords are made of plastic.
Sword (Gumdo/Jung Bong Ee)

Kamas
The kamas are small, curved-blade weapons that develop speed and dexterity. Training involves dynamic spinning, striking, and defensive maneuvers, making them one of the most challenging yet rewarding weapons to master.

Weapons Training & Safety
Safety is our top priority. Weapons training is introduced at appropriate belt levels, and students must demonstrate control and discipline before advancing to higher-level techniques. Padded or practice versions of weapons are used in early training to ensure safe learning.
